NEWTON BACK ON TT TOP

CHRIS Newton returned to winning ways on French soil over the weekend as he time trialled his way to overall victory in the 2.6-ranked Tour de la Manche.

The British rider was one of a four-man break that carved out a 15-minute advantage over the rest of the field on the first stage, but was unable to beat the French trio with him at the line.

"His reputation went before him, and he got worked over", said British team manager John Herety. Newton seized the jersey in the time trial, finishing second behind team-mate Paul Manning on the stage. "The team rode tempo on the front for the final two stages," said Herety. "I was pleased with all of them, but particularly Russell Anderson. It's his first year as a senior; we can see his potential and he's learnt a heck of a lot staying at the front for as long as he could."
